BREAKING NEWS! Malubay Ken is happy that Malubay Barbie is now coming home. According to Ken, “Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone!” So while Malubay Barbie’s fans may disappointed with her exit, Ken is ready to start breaking out new Malubay furniture to welcome her back.

Last week brought some surprising developments in the competition…

  • The performances with Dolly Parton’s material were outstanding
  • Brooke White suffered a blow to her power ranking.
  • KLC has more lives than a roomful of cats

Here are my power rankings for this week…changes are in order.

  1. David Cook – No change here. Week after week he has proven to be the strongest contender. If this were the ESPN series by the same name, he’s the one guy no would would pick to fight. He has a wide range of style and variety and all seem to be effective. In other words, he seems to have the total package.
  2. Double D Johns – The Dingo Dude from Down-Under decided to climb out of the hole he had dug for himself last week. His performance was gutsy, real, and raw. He finally showed something different and it raised his game and ranking to a whole new level.
  3. Carly Smithson – I’ve said from the beginning that she has plenty of talent. She’s got the voice, she’s got the control, she just lacked the ability to land a punch. Last week she finally found her range. Combine that with her other skills and she suddenly becomes a very real title contender.
  4. David Archuleta – How can you not like this kid? It’s impossible to pull against him. And while he has done nothing to diminish his standing, he’s done nothing to improve it. While others are gaining strength, he is standing still.
  5. Brooke White – Still my personal favorite, I was totally stunned to see her in the bottom three. There are times this competition absolutely amazes me with who winds up there. I think she has the most appeal and the most uniquely identifiable voice of the bunch. I have no idea what happened last week, but I have to take it into account this week. And as a result, she tumbles a couple of spots.
  6. Syesha Mercado – She avoided the bottom last week after a fairly good rendition of the power-diva favorite, “I Will Always Love You”. I still don’t see her making the top 5, but she does appear to be picking up some steam.
  7. KLC – Felix the Cat didn’t have as many tricks in his bag as KLC does in hers. I continue to be amazed that she’s still here, but….she’s still here. A weekly cellar-dweller, it will finally catch up to her in the next week or two.
  8. Jason Castro – JC has grinned and strummed his way through several rounds of competition. It’s been enough to get him this far, but there’s no way it lasts much longer.

I remind you each week that we play the game because there’s always the chance for an upset. Last week was a perfect example. The voting block that Malubay Barbie was riding on disappeared a little earlier than expected. There were also a few contenders that made serious moves up last week. But, as they say, you play ’em one game at a time. So lace ’em up for Round 5.
